According to Euronews and as at the time of writing, the numbers of infected cases and deaths are 2,671,538 and 358,104 respectively. Amidst the global outbreak and trend of events that follow suit, it would not be an overstatement to ascertain that the covid-19 pandemic just might extend longer than expected. If so, the creation of a vaccine or implementation of a verified herbal cure could be the best course of action to help manage the epidemic in the long term  and AI and Data science impact has gone a long way in helping this objective.

Conventionally, for a new plague such as coronavirus, it could take several years for a persistent and reliable vaccine to be developed. In this light, many a-list technological companies cutting across the spheres of AI, data science, machine learning, and information technology are establishing novel systems to check the virus. This network of technology, if integrated into a single platform, could predict and model how existing drugs “dock” with the protein strand of the coronavirus.

Considering its wide-ranging impact on our daily lives, the search for a cure for covid-19 has become an urgent endeavor worldwide. However, employing the most recent advancements in technology, the development process could be sped up; as a result, is expected to be delivered much sooner than later. Below, i describe several ways through which AI and Data science impact could help catalyze the creation of a vaccine.

Prediction and Modelling

The idea is to use deep learning to examine a vast number of cell structures and molecular details, to pinpoint molecules that best cling to the proteins of the sars-cov2 virus. A good example of this is the three-way neural networks design by Argonne national laboratories and cerebral systems. Cerebra cs-1 system is ultrafast AI computer that enables the system to answer more questions and explore more ideas in less time, drastically reducing training time across the entire neural networks.

Because of Argonne being an arm of the US department of energy and employing the record-breaking performance of cs-1, it further provisions super-computing capabilities that would otherwise have been impossible for any national laboratory to get their hands on. The biennium partnership recently witnessed its first working solution following the deployment of the cs-1. This improved ai accelerator incorporated into a system of neural network designs would dramatically expedite the search for a cure for covid-19.

Development Of Drugs

Other noteworthy ai firms such as Google’s Deepmind and Benevolentai are actively engaged in research that would aid the development of potent drugs for the coronavirus. Deepmind uses its ai superb computation power and algorithms to understand the proteins constituents of the virus among other things, and publishes these findings for use by other third-party drug producing companies.

benevolentai utilizes such data to build drugs that can combat the world toughest illnesses – in this case covid-19. Given that this is the first time benevolentai has focused its research towards infectious diseases, it made significant impact after predicting existing drugs that might work within weeks of the first outbreak. More so, chinese cloud computing corporations like huawei, tencent and didi are offering their resources of supercomputers to adopt the development of a vaccine for the virus swiftly.

AI and Data Science impact

During a global pandemic such as covid-19, various contemporary technological processes are put to the test. Data science have proven to be crucial to helping societies effectively deal with the widespread of the virus. Big data has been employed in a wide range of industrial application domains, including healthcare – where an electronic healthcare record (EHR) is used to facilitate medical services. For example; the use of health big data to potentially proffer patient health analysis, diagnosis assistance, and drug manufacturing.

Big data can be generated from several sources which may include online social graphs, mobile devices (i.e. smartphones), IoT devices (i.e. sensors), and public data in various formats such as text or video. In the context of covid-19, big data refers to the patient care data such as physician notes, x-ray reports, case history, list of doctors and nurses, and information of outbreak areas.

Generally, data science involves the information asset characterized by such a high volume, velocity and variety to acquire specific technology and analytical methods for its transformation into useful information to serve the end-users.
